EMC is active in the community and frequently offers employees a chance to get involved.
During the month of September I’ve basically been working two jobs.
During the day I’m a software engineer, building software for the storage industry.
At night, I collect plastic beer cups.
At Fenway Park.
The Greatest Perk of All Time
This has to be the greatest perk I’ve ever received at any company I’ve ever worked for (all two of them).
It’s 11 PM and I just got home from four hours of community service. It kind of went like this:
- Pick up my son from high school
- Drive into Boston
- Circle Commonwealth Ave like a hawk, waiting for a car to pull out of a parking spot
- Score a free parking spot on Comm Ave, right by Boston U.
- Walk to Gate D at Fenway
- Smile politely at the attendant and say “I’m with EMC”. Doors open.
- Son gets free t-shirt and hat (I already had mine)
- We both receive a coupon for a free Fenway Frank and soda
- We both eat a free Fenway Frank and drink a free soda
- The Fenway “Green Team” gives us garbage bags and tell us to “watch the game” and collect plastic recycle-ables in between innings
- My son and I receive our assigned section of the park: on top of the Green Monster
- We watch the game
- We collect beer cups in between innings
- After the 7th inning we drop off our bags
- We sit in two empty seats in the front row of the Green Monster
- We watch the Sox win a thrilling game
The Joy of Serving Others
Free parking, free admission, free Fenway Frank, free soda, great game.
Quality father and son time, walking the aisles of Fenway park. watching the Fenway faithful as they drained the golden liquid from their cups and threw them in our garbage bags. For some reason they seemed to get happier and happier as the game progressed.
They would see us coming down the aisle to take their empty cups and yell out “Here they come! Plastic Man and Boy Wonder!”. Then they would laugh at the Cleveland Indians left fielder.
On the drive home I thought to myself: “Volunteering in the community really makes me feel good”.
Do you think they’ll need any help in the playoffs?

Awesome blog Steve! I’m smiling so wide my face kinda hurts. Polly
I did it back in August and I too thought it was a great experience. The fans really loved the idea of recycling, and I got to watch a great game.
I liked walking up the aisle yelling “Cups! Got cups! Cups for recycling!”. Imagine it in your best peanut seller voice. Way cool.
