Yesterday the MIT Chief Data Officer and Information Quality summit kicked off at MIT in Cambridge Massachusetts. This is my first MIT CDO event and I arrived with the goal of understanding the CDO view of Data Value and how it overlaps with the Data Value research and workshops that Dr. Jim Short (San Diego Supercomputer Center) and I have conducted over the past year and a half.
The bottom line after my first day of attendance is this: everybody here is talking about Data Value.
One of the more heavily attended sessions of the day was Value Chain Data Strategy, Analytics, Valuation, Security and Risk Assessment – Industry Trends and Practices. The chair of the session was Dr. James C.S. Meng, Fomer Deputy Assistant of the Navy. It also featured my EMC colleague Barbara Latulippe, the Chief Data Governance Officer within EMC.
Barbara dazzled the audience by describing the advanced Data Lake governance implementation that is up and running within EMC. The EMC implementation of data governance within our Business Data Lakes is a combination of technology (EMC’s BDL implementation, Informatica, Collibra, etc), crowdsourcing (working with internal EMC employees to create and associate rich metadata with the lake) and innovation (members of her team and across EMC that implement compelling new ideas to track and produce business value).
As one of the first practicioners in the industry to implement a functioning Data Valuation framework, Barbara’s message has a strong overlap with Wikibon/The Cube’s emerging coverage and research agenda for Data Value. The Cube interviewed Barbara on her team’s implementation on Data Governance and quizzed her on her implementation of Data Value in a corporate setting.
